Since moving to Guntersville about a year ago, we have made some amazing friends. I might be biased, but it seems like the most interesting, successful and talented people live right here in our new hometown.
Two of the first friends I made here have recently merged their talents to publish and sell a children’s book: The Adventures of Blair Bear and Nunny the Bunny, written by Blair Newman and illustrated by Weezie Boiles. It’s based on a true story about a little girl (Blair) with a stuffed animal (Nunny Bunny) as her best friend and all the fun they have together.
I cannot tell you how much I love this book. Not just because my friends created it; Not just because my kids love it, especially my youngest; And not just because the pictures are so beautiful (which they are); But mostly because of what a sweet story it tells, one that I can relate to firsthand.
Blair Bear, Sare Bear
Growing up, my beloved Grandma called me Sara Bear or Sare Bear. She has been gone for more than a decade now, so I love that this book reminded me of her before I even cracked the spine. Any reading material that stirs up warm memories of my Grandma is a best-seller in my opinion. This is not the only similarity I have with the main character, though.
Nunny Bunny, Cupcake, Max and Dog Dog
Much like Blair Bear (the real-life adult, not the illustrated child), I still sleep with my treasured stuffed animal, a little dog named Cupcake. Yep, you read that right. After my kids, Cupcake is what I will grab if my house is on fire. He is extremely special to me. My Dad brought him home for me as a souvenir from his business trip when I was five. I still vividly remember when he gave Cupcake to me as I was sitting in my parents’ bedroom. Their carpet was a dark blue. I was the happiest kid alive. It’s funny what memories stand out nearly 30 years later, isn’t it? Cupcake and I have remained inseparable ever since. He traveled with me, survived a dog attack (unfortunately, Cupcake is now without a tongue), lived with me in college and, yes, he still sleeps with me even though I am married with two kids. Two kids, who, on their own, picked up a stuffed animal that they have slept with through every nap and nighttime sleep of their lives.
Cooper’s buddy is a green frog named Max. I received him as a gift at one of my baby showers. Max is old and not quite as fluffy as he once was. He has been washed and sewn back together (I’m not a seamstress, so he has some awful looking stitches on one of his thumbs and his crotch), but Cooper does not go to sleep without him. Years ago, I realized that Max was not on the market anymore so we would be in a real pickle if something tragic ever happened to him. My sister found an extra on Ebay, but Cooper wanted nothing to do with him. He sat in the top of his closet until my daughter came along. Now Max, Jr. resides in her room with her other stuffed animals.
Speaking of my daughter, her favorite stuffed companion and sleeping buddy is a pink and white dog who we originally named Dottie. She affectionately refers to him as Dog Dog. As a side note: I’m not sure why, but all of our stuffed animals are male in gender, even if they have pink spots. Or names like Cupcake. Dog Dog was also given to me as a shower gift for Tessa Kate. Her proud big brother picked him out for her, which makes this stuffed animal particularly special. Just like Max, Dog Dog has been washed over and over; he has certainly seen better days. But he is perfect in my daughter’s eyes. And the only thing she truly needs to go to sleep at night.
You need Nunny Bunny in your life.
Stuffed animals are clearly very special to us, which is why I love The Adventures of Blair Bear and Nunny the Bunny. It’s a cleverly written story with gorgeous pictures and the cutest main characters. Their adventures will make you laugh, warm your heart and bring back the fondest of memories all at once. Your children will absolutely love this book. But, if you're anything like me, you might enjoy it even more!
I am so so proud of my friends Blair and Weezie for bringing this story to life and for following their dreams. They are a perfect example of how creative vision, hard work and perseverance pay off. I look forward to seeing where this book takes them...and, of course, what Blair Bear and Nunny Bunny get into next!
